Back to school anxiety

The summer holidays are almost through, and now parents and children are looking to the new school term and the changes it may bring. Back to school anxiety is a common feeling that many children and adults experience. It can be caused by a variety of factors, such as:

  • Fear of the unknown

  • Worry about making new friends

  • Stress about schoolwork

  • Separation anxiety from parents or caregivers

  • Concerns about bullying or other social problems

If you or your children are feeling anxious about going back to school, there are things you can do to manage your anxiety. Here are a few tips:

  • Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling.

  • Get organised and prepared for the new school year.

  • Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation.

  • Set realistic expectations for yourself.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help from your teachers, parents, or other adults.

Here are some additional tips for parents who are helping their child with back to school anxiety:

  • Talk to your child about their fears and concerns.

  • Reassure them that they are not alone and that their feelings are normal.

  • Help them to develop a plan for coping with their anxiety, such as practicing relaxation techniques or talking to a trusted adult.

  • Be patient and understanding. It may take some time for your child to adjust to the new school year.

If you or your child's anxiety is severe, it is important to seek professional help. A therapist can work with your child to develop a treatment plan that is right for them.
